Journalistic Writing & Reporting
Q&A Story
The purpose of this assignment was to teach students how to conduct and present a focused, newsworthy interview using accurate transcription and clean journalistic writing. I produced an in-depth Q&A with Gillian Arriage, president of Georgia College’s Environmental Science Club. Arriga’s connection with the environmental science club proved useful when promoting the campus’s 2026 Earth Fest for Earth Day. This assignment emphasizes interview technique, quote accuracy, attribution and contextual introductions while introducing students to basic multimedia integration.
Reaction Story
The aim of this assignment was to teach students how to localize a broader news event through community response. I interviewed a diverse group of campus voices to capture reactions to a local, national or international issue. The story focuses on summarizing public sentiment in the lead, contextualizing quotes and reinforcing proper attribution while emphasizing balance, clarity and concise paragraph structure.
This course introduced me to the fundamentals of professional journalism, focusing on reporting, news judgment and clear, accurate writing using Associated Press style. Students learn how to find newsworthy stories, conduct ethical interviews, meet strict deadlines and write for real-world publication standards. The class emphasized experiential learning through reporting in the field, revision with instructor feedback and multimedia storytelling, which prepared me to produce a professional journalism portfolio.
Event Story
The aim of this assignment was to develop students’ ability to report on a live event and write a traditional hard news story. I attended Georgia College’s Annual Campus & Summer Jobs Fair and produced a 600-word article structured in inverted-pyramid style, being sure to incorporate multiple interviews and an outside source. My interviews ranged from campus staff and student employees to companies in attendance. This assignment also helped me build visual storytelling skills through the creation of an original photo slideshow with detailed cutlines.
Profile Story
The aim of this assignment was to help students craft a long-form, narrative-driven feature that combines reporting depth with storytelling. Students write a 1,000–1,200 word profile of a subject connected to the community, supported by multiple sources, professional photographs and an original audio or video component. This assignment help me build advanced skills in narrative structure, character development, multimedia production and ethical feature reporting.
City Council Story
The aim of this assignment was to introduce students to covering public meetings and local government reporting. I attended a Milledgeville City Council meeting and wrote a deadline-driven news story that prioritized impact and significance over chronology. This assignment strengthened my skills in agenda reading, advance research, source evaluation, paraphrasing and selecting meaningful quotes from official proceedings.
